Athabasca An alternative route from Lac La Biche to Edmonton is via Hwy 55 west 96 km (57.6 mi) to Athabasca. Tucked in a bend of the Athabasca River, the town was first named by the Hudson’s Bay Company. Many lakes in the area provide fishing and boating. Athabasca United Church dates to 1912; the Brick School built in 1913 housed grades one through 12 and now serves as the town archives, 675-2735. This is home base for Athabasca University which has a widespread reputation for its distance learning programs, call 675-6111.
